The HB survey at Lata Kekabu last weekend, Sunday, 31 Jan was disappointing, with no sighting at all. Not even calls. The general bird life there was also very quiet, with less than 10 birds recorded, mostly common low land birds.
Nevertheless, the park compound now has better toilet facilities, a new camping site, a new bridge and some new pondoks. However, some of the toilet facilitates is very much in need of maintenance and, the whole compound, a good cleanup. In spite of these few shortcomings, which I hope would improve in the future, the park offers a good society family outing for those interested in camping, picnicing, swimming, photography and trekking.
For those interested to visit the park, after exiting from the Kuala Kangsar toll plaza, the entrance to the park is about 1 km from the first traffic light after passing the Jabatan Raja Nazrin Shah along the highway enroute to Grik. There is a signboard beside the road on your left. The road into the park, another 1 km from the entrance, is accessible to all kinds of motor vehicles and, there is ample parking space just outside the park. Those who enjoy good and delicious food, try out the Lau Kai Air-Cond Restaurant (which specialises in river fish dishes) at Sauk about 9km from the park entrance along the highway, before you head for home.
Hopefully, come the dry and fruiting season, the general bird life there would be more encouraging than the present rainy season. I notice that during this rainy season, almost everywhere experiences less bird acitivities.
