Period: 25th Sept – 1st Oct 2010
We thought we had bungled the dates but on rechecking data from previous years, we realized that migration had started earlier this year, maybe due to changing weather patterns.
Thereafter, the volunteers were kept busy throughout the week keeping track of flocks of mainly Chinese Sparrowhawk and Oriental Honey Buzzard as they cruised past the observation site at Taman Lake View, Taiping. There was high drama and excitement during the count too. One Japanese Sparrowhawk was seen diving from high up to make a lightning strike at a flock of birds but flew off empty-handed. The volunteers were also treated to the sight of the seldom recorded Black Kite and Eurasian Kestrel.
The total count for the first week was a very satisfying 14,410 raptors. Volunteers who were on duty included Carol Ho, Khoo Swee Seng, Nina Cheung, Mark Ng, Lim Aun Tiah and Swee Yian.
