For the main part, this week was a bit slow-moving, with only Chinese Goshawk and Oriental Honey-buzzards coming through in small flocks. Then around mid-week we began to see some interesting changes in the migrant raptors arriving. Grey-faced Buzzards began to be seen more regularly and in larger numbers and by the end of the week, numbers of this uncommon visitor had surpassed the total counted in any of the previous years’ counts.
At about the same time, the first flocks of the much-waited Black Bazas made an appearance – 10 on the 27th, 61 on the 28th and a big jump to 957 on the 29th. Their arrival was a big relief as the annual Taiping Raptor Watch was only round the corner. The week’s total was 2,496 raptors, bringing the grand total to 37, 282 raptors. Volunteers were Ng Kit Wan, Lee Poh Peng and Lim Kim Chye.
