The Black Baza exodus that started end of last week continued, with this species dominating the migration passage while numbers for other species decreased significantly. Black Baza counts increased early in the week (very timely for our annual Taiping Raptor Watch on 31 October) then plummeted to just 36 birds on 2 November before peaking to 4,215 birds the very next day!
We can only speculate that the current rainy weather probably had something to do with this erratic passage. Besides the usual non-raptor migrants such as bee-eaters, there were also small numbers of passing Ashy Minivets and Oriental Pratincoles.
The total for the week was 13,944 raptors, mostly Black Bazas, bringing the grand total to date to 51,226 raptors. Volunteers were Nurul Salmi, Hakim Saharudin, Wendy Chin, Bing Yee, Yvonne Ang and Eileen Chiang.
